Flames

I sat next to her under
the dark blanket of the sky
that was spotted with stars
unlike anything we could see in the city.
But they were nothing compared
to the way that her eyes twinkled
from the light of our fire.

Her laughter hung in the air –
a sound more pleasant
than the chorus of crickets and cicadas
that hid in darkness around us.

Her voice became nothing more
than a whisper. Our playful laughter
turned into passionate kisses.

This moment was ours.

I laid next to her watching
the fire slowly dying. I stroked
her hair and I
let the steady
sounds of her breathing
lull me to sleep.
